Unsere nachhaltigen Kaffeekapseln sind jetzt PEFC-zertifiziert

Our sustainable coffee capsules are now PEFC certified

Our sustainable rezemo coffee capsules are made mostly of wood. This has now been independently certified by PEFC. In this article, we explain why we decided to have our coffee capsules PEFC certified and what the PEFC seal actually stands for.

PEFC – More than just a seal

Uncontrolled deforestation in forests around the world poses a threat to our ecosystem. That is why the PEFC organization has been committed to sustainable and transparent forestry since 1999. PEFC stands for the English "Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes". In German, this means "Program for the Recognition of Forest Certification Systems". In principle, a product only receives the PEFC seal when its entire value chain has been checked for certain standards. This ensures that the forest and thus the environment are protected at all times by PEFC-certified products.

What does it mean when a product carries the PEFC seal?

Products that carry the PEFC seal allow consumers to support sustainable forestry on an ecological, economic and social basis. Firstly, controlled cultivation and extraction of wood ensures that the renewable raw material is not exploited and that the forest is preserved as a natural habitat. In this way, biodiversity can be protected and CO2 emissions can be better compensated. Social standards such as compliance with human rights, occupational safety and other workers' rights are also combined under the PEFC seal. This means that each and every one of us can make a difference with our consumption. That is why at rezemo we have only used regional wood from the start and now, through PEFC certification, we are also showing transparency across the entire value chain of our coffee capsules .

How does certification with the PEFC seal work?

If a company manufactures products from wood, paper or recycled materials, it qualifies to acquire the PEFC seal. To do this, it must disclose its entire value chain and thereby provide precise evidence of where the materials used come from, whether only PEFC-certified products are used in processing and whether certain social standards are adhered to. For example, care is taken to ensure that raw materials are only extracted from PEFC-certified forests or other controlled sources. This actively counteracts overexploitation and the illegal destruction of protected forest areas. This makes a significant contribution to protecting our forests as vital ecosystems on our planet. Independent organizations carry out the checks based on strict guidelines and even after acquiring the PEFC seal, the company is audited at least once a year. This ensures that the standards set are also adhered to in the long term.

PEFC and rezemo

Our coffee capsules are mostly made of wood. However, no forests are cut down for our products because we use residual products such as sawdust and shavings from sawmills and process them into our capsules. In this way, we create an additional value-added level for this great natural material. The origin of the wood we use from sustainable forestry to protect our ecosystems is now officially verified by PEFC.

PEFC for the Future

PEFC has already sustainably managed more than 265 million hectares of forest internationally, making it the leading organization in this field. The greater the demand for wood, the more important PEFC's work becomes. Precisely because wood as a renewable raw material is promising for the future, it is important to create clear standards for sustainability. By certifying our coffee capsules, we not only demonstrate transparency, but also actively support the preservation of our forests and biodiversity worldwide.
